Roles: driver, barker, conductor
What each Diesel n' Steel role actually does in a session, how barkers and conductors stack with drivers, and which role pays while you are still learning.
Diesel n' Steel gives you five roles to work in: Driver, Jeepney Operator, Barker, Conductor and Citizen. Only Driver earns money directly from fares. The others matter because they change how fast a jeepney fills up and how smooth the trip is, and on a busy terminal a good barker is worth more than a better engine.
Roles are chosen at a spawn pod. The pod is also the jeepney shop, and only the Driver role can use it to pull out a vehicle.

What each role actually does
| Role | What you do in a session | Earns from fares |
|---|---|---|
| Driver | Spawn a jeepney, run a route, load, collect, drop off, refuel, repair | Yes |
| Barker | Stand at the terminal or roadside calling destinations, use emotes to attract passengers, signal departure when full | Indirectly |
| Conductor | Ride inside, collect fares, keep order, tell the driver when to stop | No |
| Operator | Own units, manage upkeep and route permissions, coordinate drivers | Through drivers |
| Citizen | Ride jeepneys, visit landmarks, work as a shopkeeper, student or bystander and roleplay | No |
Driver
The Driver role is the main job in the game. You take a spawn pod, select a route, and then it is a loop of loading at the terminal, collecting along the way, dropping off at the green-marked drop-off point, refuelling and repairing. Everything that costs money lands on the driver: fuel, parts, fines and repair bills after a crash.
If driving is your plan, the two pages that matter are controls and key bindings for the manual gearbox and the fare matrix so you are not losing EXP on change.
Barker
Barkers work the rear end of the jeepney and the terminal mouth. Their job is to shout the destination so passengers come to your vehicle rather than the one behind you, and to signal the driver when the jeepney is full enough to leave.
The barker's tool is the emote system. Standing at a terminal and using emotes is what attracts passengers, so a barker who never emotes is just another pedestrian. Coordination matters too: a barker who signals departure too early leaves seats unsold, and one who never signals leaves the driver sitting in the queue while another jeepney takes the next batch of passengers.
Conductor
The conductor, or konduktor, collects fares inside the jeepney and keeps order among passengers. Interaction prompts inside the vehicle let a conductor ask for one more passenger or for many more, which is how a conductor drives the loading rate without leaving the vehicle.
In practice the conductor role is a roleplay-heavy one. The driver still tends to handle payment in a normal run, but if you are playing with friends, splitting driver and conductor is the fastest way to work a crowded route without slowing down at every stop.
Operator
An Operator owns units rather than driving them. That means maintenance, roadworthiness, route permissions and coordination with whoever is driving. Franchises from the LTFRB go to operators, which is why the franchise step on the LTO hub is worth understanding even if you only ever drive.
The Operator NPC near the spawn points leases starter units to new or low-level players, which is the in-game version of the same job.
Citizen
The Citizen role is the relaxed one. Citizens ride jeepneys, walk the towns, visit the Malolos Cathedral and the Iglesia ni Cristo chapel, and roleplay as shopkeepers, students or tourists. There is no fare income here, but Citizens are also the passengers in every roleplay scenario, and landmark meetups fill the map at the terminals and in front of the cathedral.

FAQ
Which role makes the most money?
Driver, because fares go to the driver. Barker and Conductor roles make a driver's earning rate higher rather than paying out on their own.
Can I switch role mid-session?
Yes, by using a spawn pod. Only Driver lets you pull out a jeepney.
What does a Barker do that a Driver cannot?
Attract passengers with emotes and signal departure. A driver sitting in a queue cannot do either from the cab.
Is the Citizen role useful?
For roleplay and for meeting people at landmarks. It is not an earning role.
